I looked up and saw that she was watching me intently, her bottom lip caught in her teeth. âDonât look so terrified.â
âWatching you read this was probably worse than if Iâd just said it out loud,â she said. âI have no clue what I was thinking.â
âThis is all really good,â I said. âLike itâs normal stuff but together it would beâI donât know, it would make a big difference! Bringing Johnnyâs into this decade.â
Sadie grinned. âMore like this century.â
âWell, sure, thatâs fair,â I said. âYou know I actually love it here, but if all of this happened?â
She watched me, her golden-green eyes through those long lashes. âYeah?â
âJustâcan you believe me that I wouldnât lie to you? It would be incredible, and I know that youâre capable of being the person who makes this happen. I know thereâs a lot of money for you to figure out, but the rest of it, youâve got.â
She was still sitting so close, still watching me as if I was the most interesting person sheâd ever known. Be bold, I told myself, and then level up, and then I stared at Sadie and thought, say yes.
âWhat?â she asked, which was funny because sheâd been staring longer than I had. So I laughed and she joined in and, in the dim light of the bar like we were the only two people left in the world, I leaned in to kiss her.
There wasnât even a moment to worry Iâd followed terrible instincts, because Sadie kissed back immediately, almost as if it had been her idea too. The kiss was soft and somehow familiar, and I realized it was the first time Iâd kissed someone I already knew so well. It was like coming home.
We kept kissing, though it didnât stay soft for much longer than that first perfect kiss. My lips kept snagging in her teeth, and her hands were in my hair pulling me impossibly, perfectly tight against her. It was if weâd always meant to be kissing.
Even so, sitting side-by-side on barstools was not necessarily the easiest place to do this, and I wrapped my arms around her shoulders to keep us closer to the same height. There was no reason to waste any moment not kissing.
Sadieâs tongue was swirling a lazy but constant rhythm in my mouth, but I imagined its movements elsewhere. A low moan came from the back of my throat as I throbbed between my legs with the thought of her and the night still to come. It felt beyond freeing to let go, for my body to tell Sadie what I wanted.
âYou like that?â she murmured, and I nodded frantically and leaned in again for more. It could be fun, I realized, to ache so badly for someone, when the release was in plain sight. Not that I wanted to wait forever. I was so ready for her.
We tried to continue negotiating the barstools, but as our kissing intensified it grew harder to literally leverage ourselves. I forced myself back from Sadie only to hop up and wait what felt like a million years for her to do the same.
